I am fortunate enough to be involved with a school that has multiple adults in one classroom, so we get to have the benefits of small group Response to Intervention (RTI) groups each day. I have been working one-on-one with a particular student for the past few weeks, and he is wonderful to work with!

We read the book Old Jacket, New Jacket by Elliott K. Goldberg, and I introduced the idea of a "picture walk" to the student. We looked at all of the pictures and made predictions before reading the text. After we read the story, we completed a character response worksheet.
"She did not like the jacket. She made the jacket new. She got beads and stars and hearts." |
I realized we finished our character response worksheet a lot earlier than I had planned! So, I rushed to grab a piece of paper and I drew an outline of a jacket, telling the student to make his own jacket "new" just like Iris did.

Once he finished with his jacket, he looked at me and said, "I want to draw a picture just like the jacket in the story!" (Happy teacher moment!) So, we grabbed another piece of paper and drew our own interpretation of the character's new jacket!
